The last couple of days I’ve been working with the FLAR toolkit from Saqoosha to create an Augmented Reality application. The performance of the FLAR toolkit has come a long way since it’s introduction, especially with the introduction of the Alchemy version.
The only problem is, it only supports Papervision3D and no Away3Dlite. Since that’s the fastest 3d engine around at the moment, I’ve spent some time to build in Away3Dlite support for the Alchemy version. And here it is (caution, it takes a while before everything is loaded and you’ll have to use this marker):
I got a nice average of 30 fps, using Firefox with Flash Player 10.0.45,2 on a MacBookPro and even up to 42 fps using the stand alone Flash Player! It uses the Alchemy version of the FLAR toolkit which you can find here and the latest release of the Away3Dlite library, which you ca find here. If you want to play around with it yourself, you can download the source files of this demo here.
Many thanks to FLAR toolkit developers, Florian Hofmann for figuring out Away3Dlite support in the first place and of course my dear friends from Strafwerk.nu for all the help!

I left my webcam at home. I’ll have to wait until tonight to see it. But I’m excited.

Nice! I get a steady 42fps on my MacBook Pro but the marker detection is a little flimsy? Maybe my office is too bright?

Yeah, I had the same thing, when I tried it in a brightly lighted room it was way better.

Has anyone else problems with the ie on windows? The model is very very small. With Firefox the demo works fine.

hi, that’s probably the famous scale bug. it’s actually a bug/problem with a certain version of the flash player and away3dlite. There’s some more info on that on the away3dlite website.
